akerihwà:ke (about me)
Shé:kon! Welcome to my website. My name is Sara, and this is the space where I share about my writing, art, and research. My research interests are many and often intersect with the life I’m building at home and through my creative work. They include storytelling, Haudenosaunee cultural stories, Indigenous art and art history, Indigenous educational leadership, and Indigenous language revitalization.
For the past 15 years, I’ve worked for Indigenous organizations and educational institutes in the area of Indigenous education, primarily on Indigenous language revitalization projects. As a writer and an artist, I tend to bring an element of storytelling to all that I do and over the next few years, I’ll be exploring how writing, art, and storytelling can strengthen language learning experiences and how digital technologies might offer support and encouragement to language learners through the creation of digital archives and other resources.
In addition to my research, I’m a language learner currently studying at Onkwawenna Kentyohkwa, an incredibly impactful Kanyen’kéha adult immersion program here at Six Nations. Finally, I am the founder and creative director of a small publishing company, Spirit & Intent. We make books and art that celebrate Ogwehoweh people, languages, and knowledges. Our language books and other titles can be found at: www.spiritandintent.com.
Iokaraskats
I’m lucky to have been surrounded by art and incredible Indigenous artists my entire life, but it wasn’t until I had children and started working on my dissertation (in education) that visual art became an integral part of my personal creative process. I enjoy research but quickly found that academic writing required a lot of focus and left little time and energy for creative writing. Visual art then, became the way I stayed connected to my stories.
Today, I love sketching, walking through forests, and thinking about our responsibilities as Ogwehoweh people. A lot of my art is inspired by these small but still meaningful adventures or stories I’ve heard or read, so even when life or work keeps me indoors, art has a way keeping me connected to the earth. You can find my art portfolio at iokaraskats.com.

The Fortunes of Ithaca - Book 2 coming soon!
The Fortune Teller’s Daughter came out in 2019, and in between then and now, I’ve been working on two of the next books in that series: The Fortunes of Ithaca and A Lightning Song.
